We have a very limited number of places for new patients. Priority is given to urgent cases and existing patients at the clinic at all times. Thursdays are reserved exclusively for pediatric consultations (14 years and under) as of October 1, 2022.

The fees for a first visit for a new patient in our clinic are 195$ for one problem and for existing patients starting at 125$. The podiatrist is a health professional authorized to diagnose and treat foot conditions. He has a university education, Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM). The training of the podiatrist, leading to the title of doctor of podiatric medicine, represents about 1,770 hours of theoretical training and more than 2,300 hours of practical training over a four-year period. A doctorate in podiatric medicine compares a dentist.

In Quebec, he must be a member of the Order of Podiatrists. He works in a private practice. The podiatrist has the expertise and skills necessary to detect any complications related to the foot and distinguish between a podiatric pathology, which he can treat, and a disease of the system, which is rather the competence of the doctor.

In addition to offering advice on foot health and hygiene, the podiatrist can prescribe and administer certain medications, perform minor surgeries and prescribe, manufacture or modify podiatric orthotics.

No, you don't need a medical referral. If your general practitioner, medical specialist or any other health professional refers you to see a podiatrist, a prescription with the reason for the consultation can help the podiatrist and respond to the health professional with a summary of your visit. Sometimes the podiatrist can recommend a specialist for further examinations. When making an appointment, the receptionist will ask you a few questions about the reason for the consultation in order to assess the time and needs necessary for your meeting with the podiatrist.

DO YOU NEED A PRESCRIPTION FROM THE DOCTOR TO MEET A PODIATRIST?

Yes. Laboratory analyses effectively allow the podiatrist to confirm a podiatric diagnosis or to rule out any risk of systemic disease, by identifying diseases, pathologies or abnormalities in his exclusive field of exercise. These analyses also help to establish a safe treatment plan and ensure proper follow-up. In certain circumstances, tests are mandatory if the podiatrist wants to meet current medical standards and carry out the appropriate follow-up of drug therapy.

CAN A PODIATRIST PRESCRIBE LABORATORY TESTS?

Yes, to treat local foot infections. The new regulation on drugs that a podiatrist can administer or prescribe has come into force since May 2020.

CAN A PODIATRIST PRESCRIBE ORAL ANTIBIOTICS OR ANTIFUNGALS?

Yes, a podiatrist can prescribe an X-ray, ultrasound, magnetic resonance or other examination related to his field of practice, if this medical imaging examination is required and appropriate.

The NDG Podiatry Clinic treats many different types of foot and ankle issues. We treat diabetic feet, plantar warts, bunions, nail fungus, heel pain (plantar fasciitis), neuromas, calluses, corns, hammer toes, athlete's foot problems, ingrown toenails, senior foot care and more.

Radiology and ultrasound is available in the office with instant results without waiting. We are working closely with multiple custom foot orthotics labs and certified orthotist/prosthetists, and we provide prescriptions for medical shoes, braces and custom foot orthotics after consultation and evaluation.

Ultrasound is a non-invasive and safe medical imaging technique. Podiatrists use it to check the status of soft tissue, ligaments, muscles, as well as the presence of masses. It is a diagnostic tool that allows them to see and determine the severity of a foot disease.

Ultrasound* allows patients to see their injuries on the screen and thereby to better understand the condition of their feet. The podiatrist can answer the patient’s questions regarding the proposed treatment. As a result, the patient will be able to follow the treatment more easily.

Ultrasound improves the quality of the treatment by sharpening the diagnosis using highly precise images. The podiatrist can then accurately assess the quality of the soft tissue of the feet and devise a solution based on the patient’s needs. Ultrasonography of the feet is a non-invasive technology used under many circumstances. It allows healthcare professionals to evaluate the soft tissue and diagnose various problems, such as sprains, plantar fasciitis, inflammations, muscle abnormalities, tendonitis, neuromas, and more.

Digital radiography is a technology used to diagnose a bone problem while providing an instant medical imaging of the foot. The podiatrist can then assess the quality and alignment of the bones, the biomechanics, and any abnormalities present in the patient’s feet.

Digital radiology helps in the diagnosis of bone problems by means of a higher-quality medical image. The podiatrist can detect a fracture, the magnitude of a hallux valgus, a hammer toe, a bone infection, and osteoarthritis of the feet. He can then formulate the most effective treatment.

When necessary, the podiatrist may use digital radiology to prepare the feet for surgery. The high-quality images show the state of the feet, including their weaknesses. Consequently, treatments and foot surgeries are more accurate and efficient.

Plantar Warts are contagious, benign lesions which result from the proliferation of epidermal cells. The wart occurs when the human papilloma virus (HPV) enters the skin through tiny cuts in the surface layer of the skin of the foot. Under the pressure exerted on the soles of the feet, the wart is pushed inward and then covered with a thick layer of skin.

The chemical topical treatment destroys the ability of the virus to reproduce by stimulating a local immune response of the skin, so that the body can eliminate the virus. During your consultation, different options can be available and the podiatrist could apply the medication to the affected area during the visit or by providing a prescription. Some treatments can create a localized skin reaction that can be sensitive for a few days. The exact options will be presented to each patient depending on health conditions, health restrictions, activities and localisation of the warts. 

Several treatments are available under prescription and are used to eliminate resistant and deep warts. From topical to injections, the treatments are used to eliminate the cells affected by the virus and impedes its reproduction. The efficiency rate varies between patients and some options can reach up to 95% success rate after a single treatment. It is possible to feel pain during the application, as well as discomfort in the days following the intervention. The symptoms are a result of the location and aggressiveness of the plantar wart. 


Plantar Warts - Symptoms, Treatment, Prevention

A custom foot orthotic is a medical device inserted in a shoe. It is designed to change the amplitude and
duration of the forces working on the sole of the foot to allow the lower limbs to function normally.
During a weight-bearing activity, the foot orthosis reduces pathological forces by addressing
structural anomalies. By realigning forces to work efficiently, it corrects irregular biomechanics.

Commonly used with diabetic patients to prevent pressure points and foot ulcers, custom foot orthotics can be also used in sports, young feet correction, pains, injuries, everyday walking and exercises. Since there is a wide variety of foot orthotics, the podiatrist will determine if the treatment and the diagnosis of the foot condition requires a custom foot orthotics prescription. We do provide prescriptions for orthotics and shoes for different labs. Orthotics are commonly made by orthotist / prosthetist and with more accurate prescription, the patient benefits for a more accurate treatment. An adaptation period is usually expected for 4-6 weeks, and ajustements to orthotics and/or shoes are sometimes part of the treatment. Orthotics lifespan can be between one year to over five years, depending on the prescription, level of correction, patient health condition, weight and changes in usage. 

Depending on the diagnosis, the podiatrist may prescribe a functional orthotic designed to change the way the joints of the foot and lower limb function during walking. Commonly covered, padded and sometimes full length, that can be adjusted in length and width for most of shoes, depending on the treatment and patient’s medical condition.  

The accommodative foot orthotic are commonly used for diabetics, older patients or with specific medical conditions requiring very soft, gentle and padded correction. Used to relieve the pressure – in terms of magnitude and duration – from a painful or injured area on the bottom of the foot. These insoles facilitate walking because they are less rigid and more comfortable. Orthopedic shors are commonly prescribed and used with accommodative foot orthotics.

We offer dynamic orthotics with 3D moulding of the foot. They can be as versatile and as thin as possible to fit most shoes, if the patient's condition allows it. The patient can therefore transfer their dynamic custom orthotic from one shoe to another without having to buy new shoes in most of cases. Delicate orthotics can be made for specific sports, high heel shoes and fitting can be done by sending the specific shoes to the lab during the fabrication process to ensure the perfect fitting. 

CryoVizion is an imaging system that helps the patients and the podiatrist visualize and explain the posture with highly detailed images of the body. 

Being able to explain the shape of the feet, positioning of ankles, knees and general posture, helps to understand the mechanical aspects that could be related to a foot condition or current pain. It is useful  to compare in time the progression of the foot shape and the the alignment of the feet and ankles. In addition to being scientifically proven, the results lead to an accurate diagnosis that supports the best possible treatment. For over 20 years, this technology has allowed us to better understand and objectively assess the progress of treatment. A copy of the images can be useful for future referrals to other healthcare professionals, by helping to explain quicker the visual aspects of the foot and ankle shape and positioning.

With high level of accuracy and resolution, the CryoScan 3D has the accuracy of 0.5mm, which means that it can precisely  create a 3-dimensional image of the foot. 

The podiatrist is able to place the foot against a silicone membrane that is adjusted with air pressure. The 3D scan enables the capture of numerous foot shapes from the flattest to highest arches with confidence. The 3D resolution is high enough to properly reproduce that level of accuracy and to assure a quick view of the result is available after a scan is captured. It offers to the podiatrist and the patient the visual experience and helps the patient to understand the customization and the prescription of the custom foot orthotics. 

This process allows a quicker ordering of custom foot orthotics, since the orthotist in the lab can start the production  quicker by combining the 3D and 2D molds combined with the prescription made by the podiatrist.  The visualisation of the custom foot orthotics in 3D can be shared between the lab and the podiatrist during the fabrication process to better understand the possible modifications of the prescription and help the final design.

Before prescribing foot orthotics, the podiatrist will perform a medical examination, including a case history, a review of major and minor complaints, and an anatomical palpation. If necessary, additional tests will be done, including radiography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance, or referral to a specialist. At the end of the process, the podiatrist compiles the information, makes a diagnosis, and determines whether a foot orthotic is advised. Only a doctor or a podiatrist can diagnose and prescribe foot orthotics.

The examination assesses the biomechanical posture, body alignment, range of motion of the joints, and patient’s gait. This comprehensive review includes more than 70 different tests and observations of the lower limbs. It will help determine the prescription of foot orthotics.

The custom mould of the foot is important. It is designed in several different ways depending on the desired treatment and the controlled positioning of the foot. This step is essential in obtaining an effective foot orthotic.

Since May 2021, NDG Podiatry Clinic added the 3D foot scanning and moulding technology as a greener and more environmentally friendly option by reducing the shipping and material used for ordering and prescribing custom foot orthotics.  Our new orthotics are now partially made form recycled plastic. We always use the last technology and newest options to our patients with higher precision for each prescription. The custom foot orthotics for each patient are customized by combining 3D scan, 2D images and prescription provided. 

Custom Foot Orthotics - prescription 

Melanoma is the most common skin cancer. It is derived from melanocytes, from which the potential of metastases is very high. When affected by such a disease, abnormally coloured spots may appear over the entire body. A podiatrist has the necessary qualifications to detect and diagnose abnormalities of the skin of the feet and legs.

The soles of the feet have a unique skin that can develop coloured tumours, even without exposure to the sun. This area is conducive to the formation of melanoma and other skin cancers. Our clinic is geared towards preventing melanoma as well as improving your health. The podiatrist will arrange a full examination to detect the presence of benign or malignant lesions.

During a preventive consultation, the podiatrist performs a medical history, physical examination, and, if necessary, a minor skin biopsy. Skin cancer can result from damage caused by the sun’s rays. The skin of the feet can also be the site of cancers caused by viruses, chemical exposures, chronic inflammation, and irritation. Feet are rarely discussed during medical visits. At our clinic, the podiatrist carries out a complete inspection at each visit in the interests of preventive health. In addition, you can also perform an inspection of your feet using the ABCs of melanoma:


Asymmetry: The visible shape is asymmetrical; when divided in half, the two parts of the lesion are unequal.
Border: The contour of the lesion is irregular and sometimes diffuse.
Colour: May contain more than one colour as well as different tones.
Diameter: The lesion is more than 5 mm in width and can grow over time.
Elevation: The skin texture is different to the touch compared to other areas of the body.

Melanomas & Skin Cancer - Symptoms, Treatment, Prevention

Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer, and is caused by changes in melanocytes, which produce a skin pigment called melanin. Often patients will neglect to inspect between their toes, nail beds, and soles of their feet. Visiting your podiatrist is one of the best ways to avoid missing suspicious lesions (that might otherwise be missed by you). Ask your podiatrist to inspect the skin of your feet and ankles, especially if a family history was positive for skin cancers.

Melanomas & Skin Cancer

By definition, the diabetic foot runs a higher risk of complications due to a lack of sensitivity (neuropathy), decreased blood circulation (vascularization), and a high level of blood sugar that reduces the healing capacity and the effectiveness of the immune system in fighting infections.

Every diabetic should consult a podiatrist for education, prevention, and the maintenance of healthy feet. A podiatrist performs a thorough analysis of the health of the feet and determines an appropriate treatment plan. Consulting a podiatrist is important if you have diabetes, it can reduce the likelihood of hospitalization by 24% and the risk of amputation by 85%.

Diabetic foot infections are the most common reason for hospital admissions among Canadians living with diabetes. The risk of foot amputation is highest among diabetic Canadians over the age of 40 who smoke and who have had diabetes for 10 years or more.

Every diabetic should conduct a daily inspection of their feet to monitor their diabetes. In addition, there are ways to maintain health, which include avoiding walking barefoot, quitting smoking, controlling blood sugar, participating in physical exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight.

The podiatrist examines and treats diabetic feet suffering from lesions, ingrown toenails, corns, and calluses. During the consultation, he will assess the neurological status of the feet, undertake a vascular examination, and check for any sign of potential complications. Depending on the patient’s state of health, the podiatrist may recommend wearing special shoes, controlling pressure points using custom foot orthotics, and preventive surgery as a last resort.

Be aware that both corns and calluses that are not adequately addressed can lead to serious complications, such as ulcers, infections, and even to amputation of the foot in the case of diabetics.

Certain diabetics will not be able to feel pain or other sensations on their feet and will interpret this as reason not to seek medical help. Undiagnosed neuropathy can be a serious health risk. Consult your podiatrist to avoid such complications.

Diabetic Foot

Podopediatrics permanently corrects biomechanical and postural defects before the end
of a child’s growth period. A podiatrist has the ability to assess the foot in all its complexity;
the foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than 100 ligaments, tendons, and
muscles, etc. His analysis can detect anomalies and protect the health of a child’s feet.

Parents who identify an anomaly in the gait of their children or in the alignment of the feet should consult a podiatrist. He will make a diagnosis and plan the necessary treatment. Even if the child does not complain of pain, problems may be present. In addition, some diseases can appear in the form of injuries.

Preventive methods involve purchasing proper shoes, attentiveness when the child participates in sports, the prescription of custom foot orthotics and other equipment useful in biomechanical development. Furthermore, it is recommended to consult a podiatrist if a parent were to find a skin or nail problem in their child, such as plantar warts, ingrown toenails, sprains, etc.

Each patient receives a complete biomechanical examination, and a follow-up, thanks to CryoVizion, a scientifically proven technology. During the consultation, the podiatrist performs a medical-imaging exam to understand the child’s posture accurately. He then determines the best treatment that he validates by following-up the progress of the posture and biomechanics.

Podopediatrics / Child Care

Foot surgery can heal pathologies such as hallux valgus, hammer toe, etc. An x-
ray examination will help to determine whether surgery is necessary, depending
on the quality or alignment of bones and joints. It will be performed only to correct
an improper functioning of the feet or to decrease pain. Because of the complexity
of the feet, any surgery should be performed only by a podiatrist or doctor.

Minor surgery can permanently cure an ingrown toenail (onychocryptosis). When a nail penetrates the skin surrounding it, pain, redness, and swelling may occur. Infection can also spread to the surrounding tissue and sometimes even to the bone. Before administering a local anesthesia, the podiatrist evaluates whether surgery is needed. While the healing time is short, this treatment is suitable only for specific cases.

The accommodative foot orthotic requires a prescription. It aims to relieve the pressure – in terms of magnitude and duration – from a painful or injured area on the bottom of the foot. These insoles facilitate walking because they are less rigid and more comfortable.

Operation for Hallux Valgus (Bunion Foot)

The hallux valgus surgery is performed as a last resort. Prior to this, the podiatrist performs a comprehensive assessment of your biomechanics using digital radiology. Following this examination, he determines the appropriate treatment for hallux valgus. In many cases, conservative treatment, such as the wearing of orthotics, can correct a bunion foot.

The hammer toe is sometimes a complication from hallux valgus and can cause pain. Surgery is one of the possible treatments. The podiatrist determines the appropriate treatment. Visit our podiatric clinic for a complete evaluation of a hammer toe or claw toe.

Preventative Surgery Detection by Skin Biopsy

A skin biopsy can detect a large number of skin abnormalities. By taking a small sample of the skin of the lower limbs, the podiatrist can diagnose cancer and determine if the disease is affecting the adjacent skin. The biopsy can even target the source of the problem.

A nail biopsy can detect the presence of fungi and other skin diseases. It can be practised with or without local anaesthesia. The podiatrist will take a small sample of the nail and will analyze it quickly. Please note that we alone offer this service in the region.

Once the biopsy has been obtained, the sample is sent to the pathology laboratory for analysis. The skin or the nail will be examined to confirm the presence or absence of skin cancer and other diseases. Foot Surgery - Ingrown Toenails, Bunions, Hammer Toe

Foot Surgery

An ingrown toenail is a nail that penetrates the skin, causing pain and even infection. During your visit to the clinic, the podiatrist will pursue all possible avenues in order to find the etiology of the ingrown toenail.

This quick and painless treatment is used as a first line of attack for minor infections where the nail edge is still visible. The procedure (slant back) is to cut through the corner of the offending nail, without pain or anesthesia. If necessary, a follow-up may be needed to ensure the cure is permanent.

Minor surgery under local anesthetic targets the infected toe. This procedure is the most common permanent solution, with an efficiency rate of 98%. Recovery is rapid, between one and two weeks. The patient can resume normal activities in the first week without any major restrictions.

The causes are a trauma of the foot, such as wearing the wrong shoes, an old fracture, a fungus, etc. There are also biomechanical abnormalities such as hallux valgus (bunion) or pronation and neoplasms, including melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Among the congenital factors are thick nails, the shape of the phalanx, or systemic diseases, such as diabetes, anemia, pulmonary fibrosis, lymphedema, etc.

Ingrown Toenail - Symptoms, Treatment, Prevention

An untreated ingrown toenail can become infected and lead to complications. The infection can spread to nearby tissue and sometimes bone (osteomyelitis). People with diabetes who have an ingrown toenail should promptly consult our podiatrist to treat the condition and avoid complications.

Corns and calluses are thick, hardened layers of skin caused by repetitive friction. The body protects itself by increasing the thickness of the epidermal layers, creating protective dead cells.

The role of the podiatrist is to maintain the health of your feet and assess the etiology causing changes in the skin, such as corns and calluses. When appropriate, he will undertake an examination, after which he will be able to develop a personalized treatment plan. This may involve either wearing custom orthotics, performing a skin biopsy, or minor surgery.

Corns and calluses are sometimes the result of a major problem. As a precaution, the podiatrist performs a dermatological, neurological, or biomechanical evaluation. He can also undertake additional exams, like x-rays and an assessment of the patient’s gait. The data derived from these evaluations allow him to measure the health of your feet and give a precise thorough diagnosis.

To maintain their state of health, it is highly recommended that diabetics consult a podiatrist. Moreover, it is not advisable to accept bargain-basement care; it is best to ensure that all complications are avoided. The risks of corns and calluses for a diabetic can lead to amputation of the feet if severe complications occur.

Be aware that both corns and calluses that are not adequately addressed can lead to serious complications, such as ulcers, infections, and even to amputation of the foot in the case of diabetics. Consult us to avoid such complications.
